Hey guys,
After watching the Marlins play the Braves today, I basically gave up on them. I knew they were never going to make the post season by any means but I still watched and hoped they could at least win games. Sure they win games but it always scares me with Leo Nunez as our closer, and not to mention the worst bullpen in the MLB. I don't mean to single out Leo Nunez but he has accounted for a good number of the Marlins losses this season. Josh Johnson & Ricky Nolasco could have many more wins if Nunez could close a game, and our bullpen don't make games save situations. A prime example was the Braves game today, Josh Johnson left the game with the score 6 to 1. With that lead you assume that you will win the game but with our display of a horrible bullpen as well as fielding we end up losing. Sure, todays loss should not be put entirely on Nunez but it was his fault ultimately that lead to the loss.
Our fielding is really bad, but in general our bad fielding comes at 3B. We really don't have a good fielding 3B. Maybe if Coghlan wouldn't have over celebrated we wouldn't be switching the whole world at 3B. I don't think I have seen a Marlins game this season where are fielding was amazing and didn't allow an error. But fielding is just one of the many points the Marlins need to work on. The Marlins need to focus next season on their bullpen, they basically should get rid of everyone. No one in that bullpen deserves to be on an MLB team. Our starting pitching this season has played remarkable but the bullpen always ends up ruining it. If we could get half of those games we lost because of our bullpen we would be in the lead of our division. Many people disagree with that statement but go look up the worst bullpen in baseball and you find the Marlins with the most blown saves. At this point I would bring up no names in our minor league system to be in our bullpen and maybe could do just around the same thing our bullpen is doing now which is losing games.
Starting pitching is one thing I love about the Marlins, I can't complain with the job Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez, & Ricky Nolasco have done. Josh Johnson had another all-star year, but Ricky Nolasco could have had one too if our bullpen didn't ruin some of his starts. But enough about the bullpen I've moved on and starting to point out positives. One of the new talents in pitching is Alex Sanabia, man could this guy pitch. Talk about a no name becoming a huge starting pitcher, and a dominate pitcher to say the least. Sanabia has controlled teams ever since they called him back up, he seems untouchable. So for sure to me starting pitching is amazing with the exception of some players. What is starting pitching when you got no bullpen? Teams that win, have a bullpen that maintains the teams lead and does not lose games for them. But lets go to another positive point, young talent. We have so much young talent in our system, with players like Stanton, Sanabia, Morrison, & Sanchez. They all have proven themselves and hopefully have a long stay with the Marlins, but their are some players that go unknown that I must point out. Look at Donnie Murphy & Brett Hayes, they aren't superstars by any means but they sure can play. Donnie Murphy comes up with clutch hits and brings home runs more than I can say about some players on the Marlins. Brett Hayes is actually coming alive, now that he has taken over the starting job at catcher. He can field well which is what you look for in a catcher, maybe Paulino testing positive for substance abuse was a good thing for the organization. It shows we have another catcher to turn to.
I could go on and on about the good and bad about the Marlins but in the end its only the organization that has the final say about what their gonna do. The organization needs to examine our bullpen and get rid of half, if not all of them. Leo Nunez needs to work on his closing skills, he relies to much on his changeup and half the time his changeup losses us the game. He is frustrating to watching but for some reason I see potential, but he has to be reliever not a closer for the time being. The organization needs to look at getting rid of players like Maybin and Miller. Sure Maybin has great games but some games you think, man this guy should not be playing in the MLB. Maybin must work on fielding, he does not know how to judge balls and balls go past him left and right. Maybin has potential no doubt but when is it going to come out, everyone said he was going to be a superstar. I dont see him any time soon being a superstar. Andrew Miller is another player that should not play baseball. Some starts he had last year I was impressed but another starts showed how bad he was. Not to mention this season, Andrew Miller got called up to the MLB with a record of 2-9 in Jacksonville. How in your right mind are you going to call up someone like that? But he can't pitch to save his life but maybe both of these players with prove me wrong in the future but to tell you the truth I doubt it. Both came from the same trade and are the same garbage.
Let me know, what you think about this. I hope you guys like it and always open to what you guys think. If you disagree let me know, I always like a nice discussion about the Marlins.
Thanks guys,
NICK C.
